Academic Impact: Our Latest Wins

Your SU have had a busy month since Term 2 has started! We’ve been posted on campus walkways, talking and engaging with students for some major activity this month. Read below to find out some of the work we have been delivering…

Employability

  • We delivered 9 sessions focused around making you stand out to potential employers. We covered  Public speaking frameworks, Project Management from inception to delivery & High Impact, Mindful Presentation.
  • We also cultivated student awareness in regards to Unconscious Bias, being an Active Bystander and supporting Students from LGBTQIA+ backgrounds success during LGBTQIA+ History Month. Across the sessions we met with over 25 proactive students who are consistently developing skills which will set them apart in the graduate job market!

Check-ins

  • Throughout February and March, our team of trained student callers have delivered over 1100 check-ins with students. We’ve made an amazing 5000+ calls to student to check-in see how you’re getting on this term and offer some support. We will use your feedback to create a report to share with the University and lobby to improve your student experience.

LGBTQIA+ History Month Celebration

  • In collaboration with our student & staff LGBTQIA+ networks, we delivered an incredible Tens Across Drag Queen social event in the former CityBar/new Dukes space to uplift our communities at City and shine greater visibility for all students to feel more safe on campus. With over 50 attendees and a City student-led Indie Rock band blasting queer anthems, the event will be one of many in future!

Advice

  • Union Advice led on delivering National Student Money Week during February, which is a student money awareness campaign many universities across the country take part in. As well as putting on informative financial events, we had a stall on the walkway of University Building where students had to guess how much a bunch of shopping items cost. We can now announce that the total cost of the shopping was £43.26 and the lucky winner out of 159 student guesses has been contacted!

Societies

  • Society activity on campus has been booming this term! We’ve had over 50 events on campus so far, including some big collaborations between societies. We’ve also seen a lot of fundraising, including bake sales and charity events.
  • Societies are also preparing to elect their committees for next academic year, so we will see lots of AGMs, elections and handovers taking place over the next month.

SU Awards

  • Over 300 nominations have come in for the SU Awards across many awards that recognise the impactful contributions of City students, staff and societies. We’re excited to host our biggest Awards yet in person and announce our winners across 18 Awards with honourable mentions, so keep an eye out if an invite appears in your inbox!

EDI Reps

  • After the success of the EDI Reps last academic year we’re recruiting for our next 10 fantastic EDI Reps. The City Students’ Union EDI reps research the experience of students of colour within schools and produce recommendations to fight for racial justice at City. The EDI Reps also feed in to important pieces of university work to tackle inequalities at City such as the race Equality Charter, The Attainment Project and Access and Participation Plans. The EDI Reps will also sit on the new Student EDI Steering Group, chaired by the VP Community and Wellbeing, providing a representative body to represent City student on matters relating to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

University Mental Health Day

  • Study Well had made a reappearance again this term for this year’s University Mental Health Day. We ran a whole day of events to bring together the City community and make mental health a university-wide priority for this day and everyday. You may have seen City’s Mental Health and Counselling services team and also visitors from Mind across the day to talk to students about the support services available to you, in addition to our popular events like cupcake decorating and a Bob Ross painting event that saw over 60 students!
