Support after the UK Supreme Court Ruling

Two weeks ago, the UK Supreme Court ruled that the terms “woman” and “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 only refers to those assigned female at birth, excluding transgender women who hold gender recognition certificates and intersex individuals.

Although it is unclear how this will affect daily functioning of organisations, this decision marks a deeply concerning moment for transgender and non-binary communities. We understand this impacts many students at City St George’s, and as a Union we stand in support of all our members.

Differences in perspective are unavoidable in a diverse community, so please remember to be kind to one another as many will be affected by this ruling in different ways. Reaching out to those in your life who might be anxious or upset can make a big difference, every gesture of support is hugely valuable.
