The 2024/2025 academic year has been nothing short of a rollercoaster; filled with long lectures, tight deadlines, exam panic, and all the chaos in between. Yet through it all, many of you chose to do something extraordinary: you paused, made time for passion, for people, and for purpose beyond the classroom.
Whether through society involvement, campaign leadership, or just showing up for your peers, you’ve proven that university is more than just academics; it's about impact, growth, and building communities that last. You got involved, you showed up, and you made a difference.
At the heart of the Students’ Union is you. Without your energy, ideas, and efforts, our spaces would be empty, and our events meaningless. This year, we’ve had over 160 active societies and hosted over 1,000 events, proof that student life here is thriving. From your nominations, we selected the champions who went above and beyond to inspire, uplift, and lead.
Below, we spotlight this year’s Students’ Union Clerkenwell and Moorgate Society and Carrot Award Winners:
Best New Society: Mental Health Society
Launched with passion and purpose, Mental Health Society has quickly made a name for itself by hosting impactful events, growing a supportive community, and creating safe spaces for honest conversations around wellbeing. A powerful first year with a promising future.
EDI Award (in collaboration with City St Georges’ EDI team): Women in Law
This society has embedded equality, diversity, and inclusion deeply into its culture, using activism as a tool for awareness and change. Their approach has influenced not just their events, but the way the society is run, a model for inclusive student leadership.
Employability Society of the Year: Buttonwood Investment Society
With a strong focus on professional development, Buttonwood has hosted workshops, networking events, and career talks that help students explore a wide range of roles within the finance sector. They’ve supported members to build confidence and clarity about life after university.
Academic Society of the Year: Speech and Language Therapy Society
From hosting engaging talks to bringing in external speakers and involving course leaders, this society has successfully bridged the gap between classroom learning and professional insight. Their events have added real value to the academic journeys of their members. Even receiving nominations from academics that they have worked with throughout the year!
Most Improved Society: Engineering Society
The Engineering Society has shown incredible growth in both membership and engagement, Increasing their members by 10-fold. Their commitment to bettering their events and community has been truly commendable. Winning them £100 to keep this amazing growth going.
Event of the Year: Hindu Society – Mastani Ball
A stunning collaborative event across multiple London Hindu Societies, Mastani Ball was a great evening of celebration, culture, and unity; an unforgettable highlight of the year. Resulting in the Hindu Society receiving £100 from the Students’ Union to keep running amazing events.
Fundraising Champion: Friends of Palestine Society
For their second year running, the Friends of Palestine has won our Fundraising Champions of the Year! Raising significant funds for humanitarian causes, this society combined activism with action. Their large-scale fundraising efforts showcased not only dedication but also effective community mobilisation.
Society of the Year: Engineering Society
From impressive CAD and robotics projects to a strong presence across campus, Engineering Society has delivered high-quality events, maintained strong communication with the Students’ Union, and built a thriving community. Their rapid growth and consistent activity set them apart as the winner of the most coveted Students’ Union Award and this year’s top society, and the top price of £200!
While we can only give out a few awards, the truth is that so many of you have made a difference - which is clearly shown through our over 400 nominations. From organising smaller meetups to keeping your society group chats active, from society balls to trying something new for the first time, you are the heartbeat of student life.
