At the start of Term 1 we ran our Student Check-ins project. We spoke with 3,500+ new and returning students checking that they had everything they needed to start at City and understand what more the Union and the University could do to help with incoming student issues. We put together a report summarising the main themes that students raised and made recommendations to City about what could be done to ensure you were supported. 

City responded to these with some big wins for students. We wanted to share with you what your feedback contributed towards, what is being done about it and tell you about some of the wins! We look forward to resuming the Student Check-ins at the start of Term 2 to check-in, see how you’re getting on, and continue to improve your student experience!

Student Experience

Delivery of ‘Welcome Back/Refreshers’ on campus and online activity for students in Term 2. 

Student & Academic Services and Students’ Union have planned many events for students returning to campus in Term 2.

Ensure that community building activities continue throughout Term One to build on the sense of community felt by students in Welcome Week. 

City Connects Community Fund | City, University of London launched to support students to continue to build community throughout 21-22.

Repeat Check-ins during pre-welcome for incoming students and for returning students during Welcome 22. 

Check-ins to be incorporated in planning for 2022/23 Welcome offer through Welcome advisory group.

Improve search function of Student Hub to support student navigation of the platform. 

The Student Voice team worked with the web team to update search function to include more terms that improved search function of Student Hub and navigation of the platform.

Academic Support

Module leaders to communicate the services delivered by the Academic Skills team to help build the academic confidence of returning students and ensure they are aware of support available to them should they require it. 

Programme integrated sessions are being delivered with communications to students on offer for academic skills. All student registered on Moodle with access to a range of resources including academic skills. 

WIN! 

Provide more online Student and Academic Services Q+A sessions prior to and during Welcome Week to address student questions. 

Feedback from Online Student and Academic Services Q&A event will be used to develop pre-arrival and welcome offer for 22/23 to support students to transition and enhance registration. 

In Progress 

Monitor the impacts of blended learning on the student learning experience. Ensure schools clearly communicate what blended learning looks like at a local level and the reasons for this. 

Clear communications from City and Schools at a programme level on what teaching and learning will look like for 21-22 sent prior to the start of teaching. Term 2 communications on teaching and learning offer communications to students 15th November 2021.

Registration and Timetables

City and the Union to collaborate on reviewing the registration process from a student’s perspective. Particular attention to be paid to communications to students during the registration process. 

Student & Academic Services collaborated with Students’ Union to update FAQs to best triage students queries about registration.

Produce more resources to support students in accessing their timetables. Resources should be clear, interactive and include audio or visual material. 

Key to City Campaign and emails to returning students provided additional guidance and resources on how to access timetables on My Timetable.  

WIN! 

Ensure that City more effectively manage expectations regarding the release of timetables and provide students with a deadline they should receive adjustments to their timetables for Term 2. 

Term 2 communications on teaching and learning offer communications to students 15th November 2021 including information on when students should receive timetables for Term 2.
